Bilirubibin, also known as bilirubin or bilirubin, is the main pigment in animal bile. It is a chain shaped compound with four pyrrole rings connected by a methylene group at its alpha position.

Bilirubin is the final product of heme degradation, with 70% -90% of bilirubin coming from the degradation of hemoglobin in aging red blood cells. The common source of bilirubin is pig bile.

It appearance is Orange to reddish-brown powder insoluble in water, soluble in benzene, chloroform, carbon disulfide, acids and bases, slightly soluble in ether and ethanol. When heated, the color of bilirubin gradually darkens and does not melt, and its light green solution shows red fluorescence under ultraviolet light.

Bilirubin is insoluble in water, and the bilirubin produced in the periphery tightly binds with albumin and is transported from the plasma to the liver. Under normal circumstances, bilirubin can be rapidly and effectively cleared from the circulation by liver cells. If bilirubin is too high, it usually indicates certain diseases.

1.Potent antioxidant

Bilirubin can eliminate free radicals such as superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide in the body, inhibit lipid peroxidation reactions, and protect cell membranes and DNA from oxidative damage. Its antioxidant capacity is about 10 times that of vitamin E, and even stronger than glutathione.

If patients with diabetes have complications, retinopathy and nephrotic symptoms. It can alleviate oxidative damage caused by high blood sugar.

2.Anti-inflammatory

By inhibiting the release of inflammatory factors, the inflammatory response is reduced.

Especially after birth, newborns experience a significant breakdown of red blood cells and a brief increase in bilirubin, leading to physiological jaundice. Phototherapy with a wavelength of 425-475 nm can be used to isomerize bilirubin into water-soluble light products, which are then excreted through bile/urine to alleviate jaundice.

3.Cardiovascular protection

It can reduce the oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) and delay the process of atherosclerosis through antioxidant. Slightly elevated bilirubin levels are associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

If the total bilirubin is in the high range of 8-17 μ mol/L, taking products containing bilirubin can significantly reduce cardiovascular mortality.

4.Neuroprotection

By crossing the blood-brain barrier, neurons are protected from oxidative stress damage. Higher levels of bilirubin may reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease - Alzheimer's disease.
