What's SAMe?

S-Adenosyl-L-methionine disulfate tosylate (SAMe) is mainly composed of methionine and adenosine triphosphate.

It participates in a variety of biochemical reactions in human body and is the active precursor of sulfur-containing compounds such as glutathione, cysteine, taurine and coenzyme A.

What are Benefits of SAMe?

1.Emotion regulation

It can promote the synthesis of 5-HT/DA/NE, increase the level of monoamine transmitters in the brain, and alleviate emotional fluctuations. For patients with depression, taking it can improve the effect of antidepressants.

2.Joint repair

Firstly, by stimulating the expression of articular chondrocytes, the synthesis of core proteoglycans can be promoted. Promote the proliferation of chondrocytes. Secondly, inhibiting inflammatory factors can help repair joint cartilage, thereby reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis.

3.Support liver metabolism

Firstly, promoting glutathione synthesis can accelerate the binding and clearance of metabolites such as acetaminophen, thereby enhancing detoxification function.

Secondly, by upregulating the expression of transport proteins and promoting the secretion of phospholipids into bile, goose deoxycholic acid is converted into hydrophilic ursodeoxycholic acid, thus keeping bile in a stable state

Therefore, it can assist in the treatment of diseases such as cholestasis and cirrhosis, and support the restoration of liver cell membrane fluidity.

Who should not take SAMe supplements?

S-adenosylmethionine disulfate tosylate (SAMe) is popular in dietary supplements, but its biological activity is strong. The following populations should strictly avoid or prohibit its use

1.Taboos for special populations

1) Patients with bipolar disorder

May trigger manic episodes, leading to insomnia and affecting emotional fluctuations.

2) Patients with severe liver and kidney dysfunction

Including decompensated liver disease and end-stage renal disease, there may be signs of hepatic encephalopathy such as blurred consciousness and flapping tremors, exacerbating uremic itching.

3) Pregnant women (early and late stages), infants, and children can all experience uncontrollable side effects.

The above three groups of people are not allowed to take products containing SAMe.

2.Relatively taboo groups

Patients with autoimmune diseases, such as common systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis. And people who are already taking specific medications, such as antidepressants. In both cases, you can reduce the use of SAMe products or follow medical advice.

Therefore, pregnant women, mental illness patients, and chronic disease patients are prohibited from using it, and people under 18 years old should follow medical advice.
